Killing of demons Khara and Dusman from Chaubis Avatar (Sri Dasam Granth Sahib)

 ਅਥ ਖਰਦੂਖਨ ਦਈਤ ਜੁੱਧ ਕਥਨੰ ॥ 

Now begins the description of the battle with demons Khar and Dusman.

ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਛੰਦ ॥ 

Stanza of Sundari

ਰਾਵਨ ਤੀਰ ਰੁਰੋਤ ਭਈ ਜਬ ॥ ਰੋਸ ਭਰੇ ਦਨੁ ਬੰਸ ਬਲੀ ਸਭ ॥ ਲੰਕਸ ਧੀਰ ਬਜੀਰ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ ਦੂਖਨ ਔ ਖਰ ਦਈਤ ਪਠਾਏ ॥੩੩੭॥ 

When Surapanakha weeped to Ravana, the entire demon-clan was enraged. Ravana summoned his court ministers. With their guidance he sent two demons named Khar and Dusmana to kill Ram and avenge Surapanakha.

ਸਾਜ ਸਨਾਹ ਸੁਬਾਹ ਦੁਰੰ ਗਤ ॥ ਬਾਜਤ ਬਾਜ ਚਲੇ ਗਜ ਗੱਜਤ ॥ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਸੋ ਦਿਸ ਕੂਕੇ ॥ ਸਾਵਨ ਕੀ ਘਟ ਜਯੋਂ ਘੁਰ ਢੂਕੇ ॥੩੩੮॥ 

The long-armed demons, Khar and Dusman, adorned themselves with armour and left on their steeds with the noise of many elephants following. Everyone chaneted “Kill, Kill” from all sides from within their army like the dark clouds in the month of Savan.

ਗੱਜਤ ਹੈ ਰਣਬੀਰ ਮਹਾ ਮਨ ॥ ਤੱਜਤ ਹੈਂ ਨਹੀ ਭੂਮਿ ਅਯੋਧਨ ॥ ਛਾਜਤ ਹੈ ਚਖ ਸ੍ਰੋਣਤ ਸੋ ਸਰ ॥ ਨਾਦਿ ਕਰੈਂ ਕਿਲਕਾਰ ਭਯੰਕਰ ॥੩੩੯॥ 

Powerful warriors are thundering their opposition as they stand their ground firmly on the battlefield. Their eyes flourish like pools of blood while raising deafening shrieks to incite fear in their enemies.

ਤਾਰਕਾ ਛੰਦ ॥ 

Stanza of Taarkaa

ਰਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਬਿਰੱਚਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਸਰ ਸੇਲ ਸਰਾਸਨ ਨੱਚਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਸੁ ਬਿਰੁੱਧ ਅਵੱਧਿ ਸੁ ਗਾਜਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਰਣ ਰੰਗਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਬਿਰਾਜਹਿਗੇ ॥੩੪੦॥ 

Within the battlefield, Ram and Lakshman will charge into battle. Swords, lances, and spears will all dance in the hands of their warriors. The warriors will continue to roar against the demon armies till death. This way Ram will be completely colored in the dye of war.

ਸਰ ਓਘ ਪ੍ਰਓਘ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੈਗੇ ॥ ਰਣਿ ਰੰਗ ਅਭੀਤ ਬਿਹਾਰੈਗੇ ॥ ਸਰ ਸੂਲ ਸਨਾਹਰਿ ਛੁੱਟਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਦਿਤ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਾ ਪਰ ਲੁੱਟਹਿਗੇ ॥੩੪੧॥ 

They will shower arrows upon everyone. Without any fear they will roam the battlefield amidst the chaos. Tridents, arrows, and swords will bash and sons of demons will fall to the ground.

ਸਰ ਸੰਕ ਅਸੰਕਤ ਬਾਹਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੀਤ ਭਯਾ ਦਲ ਦਾਹਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਛਿਤਿ ਲੁੱਥ ਬਿਲੁੱਥ ਬਿਥਾਰਹਿਗੇ ॥ ਤਰੁ ਸਣੈ ਸਮੂਲ ਉਪਾਰਹਿਗੇ ॥੩੪੨॥ 

Eradicating any doubt they will shoot arrows. Leaving fear behind they will destroy the horrific legions of the enemy. Bodies upon bodies will be scattered across the earth. The mighty warriors will uproot the tree of evil as they put an end to Ravana and dismantle the demon clans.

ਨਵ ਨਾਦ ਨਫੀਰਨ ਬਾਜਤ ਭੇ ॥ ਗਲ ਗੱਜਿ ਹਠੀ ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਫਿਰੇ ॥ ਲਗਿ ਬਾਨ ਸਨਾਹ ਦੁਸਾਰ ਕਢੇ ॥ ਸੂਅ ਤੱਛਕ ਕੇ ਜਨੁ ਰੂਪ ਮਢੇ ॥੩੪੩॥ 

The notes of fifes began playing and warriors roared like lions, roaming in the fields of war. The shafts were broken from their quivers as the serpent-like arrows went through their targets completely. It is as if the arrows were all children of death.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਕ ਸਨਾਹਰਿ ਝਾਰਤ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਣਬੀਰ ਨਵੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰਤ ਹੈ ॥ ਸਰ ਸੁੱਧ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਿਤ ਛੋਰਤ ਹੈ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਰੋਸ ਹਲਾਹਲ ਘੋਰਤ ਹੈ ॥੩੪੪॥ 

They were all swinging their swords fearlessly. Warriors taunted other warriors. Whitened Arrows sharpened on rocks were let loose. The poison of anger was stirred in the hearts of their enemies.

ਰਨ ਧੀਰ ਅਯੋਧਨੁ ਲੁੱਝਤ ਹੈਂ ॥ ਰਦ ਪੀਸ ਭਲੋ ਕਰ ਜੁੱਝਤ ਹੈਂ ॥ ਰਣ ਦੇਵ ਅਦੇਵ ਨਿਹਾਰਤ ਹੈਂ ॥ ਜਯ ਸੱਦ ਨਿਨੱਦਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਤ ਹੈਂ ॥੩੪੫॥ 

Conquering warriors fight on the battlefield. Crushing teeth, they attack each other . Gods and demons both observe the ground and raise their sound of victory.

ਗਣ ਗਿੱਧਣ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਰੜੰਤ ਨਭੰ ॥ ਕਿਲਕੰਤ ਸੁ ਡਾਕਣ ਉੱਚ ਸੁਰੰ ॥ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਛਾਡ ਭਕਾਰਤ ਭੂਤ ਭੂਅੰ ॥ ਰਣ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਹਾਰਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਦੂਅੰ ॥੩੪੬॥ 

Great vultures and Ganas are in the sky seeing the chaos unfold below. The dreadful vampfire was shrieking loudly as ghosts laughed. Both brothers, Ram and Lakshman, are roaming the battlefield without any fear.

ਖਰਦੂਖਣ ਮਾਰ ਬਿਹਾਇ ਦਏ ॥ ਜਯ ਸੱਦ ਨਿਨੱਦ ਬਿਹੱਦ ਭਏ ॥ ਸੁਰ ਫੂਲਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਖਾ ਬਰਖੇ ॥ ਰਣ ਧੀਰ ਅਧੀਰ ਦੋਊ ਪਰਖੇ ॥੩੪੭॥ 

They killed Khar and Dusman and let their bodies flow in the river of death. Everyone hailed the victory of the brothers from all sides. The gods showered flowers to the sight of the victory which warriors Ram and Lakshman had just achieved.
