Abduction of Sita

 ਅਥ ਸੀਤਾ ਹਰਨ ਕਥਨੰ ॥

Now begins the description of the abduction of Sita.

ਮਨੋਹਰ ਛੰਦ ॥

Stanza is Manohar.

ਰਾਵਣ ਨੀਚ ਮਰੀਚ ਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬੀਚ ਗਏ ਬੱਧ ਬੀਰ ਸੁਨੈਹੈ ॥ ਬੀਸਹੂੰ ਬਾਹਿ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗਹੇ ਰਿਸ ਮਾਰ ਮਨੈ ਦਸ ਸੀਸ ਧੁਨੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਾਕ ਕਟਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਸੂਪਨਖਾ ਕਹਤਉ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਦੋਖ ਲਗੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਾਵਲ ਕੋ ਬਨੁ ਕੈ ਪਲ ਮੋ ਛਲ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਘਰਨੀ ਧਰਿ ਲਯੈ ਹੈ ॥੩੪੮॥

The foul Ravan went to the house of the demon Marich and told him about the slaughter of Khara and Dusmana. Ravan had all twenty of his hands equipped with blades. He nodded all his ten heads in fury and began to speak. “The cutting of Surapankha’s nose has caused me immense pain. I will disguise myself as a yogi and steal their wife in an instant so they may know the pain which I feel.

ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਨਾਥ ਕੀਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਤਿ ਮੋਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਹ ਆਏ ॥ ਭਉਨ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਅਟੀ ਬਿਕਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਜ ਸਭੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰ ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਨਾਥ ਬੁਰੋ ਮਤ ਮਾਨੋ ॥ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਸਹੀ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਤਿਨੈ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਸ ਕੈ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੋ ॥੨੪੯॥

Marich answered Ravan, “My Lord,you have blessed me greatly by coming to my home. My house, palace, and treasuries which were empty are all overflowing with your presence. Though, I must say with folded hands, do not mind my words. Ram Chandar is indeed an avatar. Don’t take him for an average person.”

ਰੋਸ ਭਰਯੋ ਸਭ ਅੰਗ ਜਰਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਰੱਤ ਕਰਯੋ ਜੁਗ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਏ ॥ ਤੈ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਠ ਬੋਲਨ ਮਾਨਸ ਦੁਐ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਗਨਾਏ ॥ ਮਾਤ ਕੀ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੇ ਤਜਿ ਤਾਤ ਘ੍ਰਿਣਾ ਬਨਬਾਸ ਨਿਕਾਰੇ ॥ ਤੇ ਦੋਊ ਦੀਨ ਅਧੀਨ ਜੁਗੀਯਾ ਕਸ ਕੈ ਭਿਰਹੈਂ ਸੰਗ ਆਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੩੫੦॥

By hearing Marich say this Ravan was filled with anger as if fire was ignited inside of him, his face turning crimson, and his eyes filling with pools of blood. “You fool, do not speak of such things in front of me. Once their mother uttered one word and their father disowned them as he kicked them out of the house of Banbas, sending them into the forest. Both of them are helpless and low people, in what way will they be able to challenge me in war?”

ਜਉ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਤਹਾ ਕਹ ਤੈ ਸਠਿ ਤੋਰ ਜਟਾਨ ਕੋ ਜੂਟ ਪਟੈ ਹੌ ॥ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟ ਕੇ ਊਪਰ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਹਿ ਨਦੀਸਰ ਬੀਚ ਡੁਬੈ ਹੌ ॥ ਚਿੱਤ ਚਿਰਾਤ ਬਸਾਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਰਿਸਾਤ ਚਲਯੋ ਮੁਨ ਘਾਤ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥ ਰਾਵਨ ਨੀਚ ਕੀ ਮੀਚ ਅਧੋਗਤ ਰਾਘਵ ਪਾਨ ਪੁਰੀ ਸੁਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੩੫੧॥

“Fool, If I wasn’t here asking for your help then I would’ve uprooted your hair from your scalp, taken you to the top of this palace and thrown you into the sea to drown.” Ravan said. Upon hearing this, Marich became very uncomfortable in the company of Ravan. He was filled with anger but he had no power to show and he stormed out of the palace. He thought to himself that a death by the hands of Ravan would surely land him in hell but if he were to die by the hands of Ram then it would result in liberation. 

ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋ ਹਰਨਾ ਬਨ ਕੇ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਬਲੀ ਜਹ ਥੋ ਤਹ ਆਯੋ ॥ ਰਾਵਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਉਤ ਕੇ ਜੁਗੀਆ ਸੀਅ ਲੈਨ ਚਲਯੋ ਜਨੁ ਮੀਚ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥ ਸੀਅ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਕੁਰੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਕਹ ਮੋਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੀਰ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਆਨ ਦਿਜੈ ਹਮ ਕੱਉ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਵਾਸੁਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਵਧੇਸ ਮੁਕੰਦ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੩੫੨॥

He contemplated upon this.He took the form of a golden deer and reached the place in which Ram and his companions resided. On the other hand, Ravan put on the attire of a yogi and went to kidnap Sita. It was as if death had been calling Ravan. Sita saw the golden deer and was amazed by his beauty. She went to Ram and said “O Lord, the king of Oudhia, I ask of you to bring that deer to me.”

Ram’s Speech.

ਸੀਅ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਾ ਕਹੂੰ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਨ ਸੁਨਯੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਨੈ ਨ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥ ਬੀਸ ਬਿਸਵੇ ਛਲ ਦਾਨਵ ਕੋ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਜਿਹ ਆਨ ਤੁਮੈ ਡਹਕਾਯੋ ॥ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਕੋ ਆਇਸ ਮੇਟ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਸੀਆ ਕਹੁ ਆਤੁਰ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ ਬਾਧ ਨਿਖੰਗ ਚਲੇ ਕਟਿ ਸੌ ਕਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਈਹਾ ਕਰਿਜੈ ਰਖਵਾਰੀ ॥੩੫੩॥

Ram answered back to Sita, “Sita, I have never seen or heard of a golden deer and nor has the Lord created such a creature. This is the illusion of some demon who went into the jungle to take the form of a golden deer and deceive you.” Sita became very sad when she heard this. Ram could not turn away Sita’s request. He tied his quiver to his back, told Lakshman to protect the palace, and went to bring Sita the golden deer. 

ਓਟ ਥਕਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਨਿਸਾਚਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਯੋ ॥ ਹੇ ਲਹੁ ਬੀਰ ਉਬਾਰ ਲੈ ਮੋਕਹ ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਪੁਕਾਰਯੋ ॥ ਜਾਨਕੀ ਬੋਲ ਕੁਬੋਲ ਸੁਨਯੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਸੁਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥ ਰੇਖ ਕਮਾਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਢ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਇਤ ਰਾਵਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੩੫੪॥ 

Marich, as the golden deer, tried very hard to outrun Ram and save his life but atlast Ram hunted him down and killed him. Marich on his last breaths began to tell Ram, “O brother Lakshman, come save me please.” He then began to utter ‘Ram,Ram’. Sita misheard Marich’s cry and took it as Ram’s. She ordered Lakshman to go and investigate. Before leaving, Lakshman took out an arrow and drew a line around the palace. “Whoever crosses this line shall burn instantly” he said, Right after, Ravan arrived as a yogi.

ਭੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੈ ਰਾਵਣ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਸੀਅ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਯੌ ॥ ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਧਨੀ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਗ ਮੋ ਠਗ ਜਯੋ ॥ ਕਛੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਭਿਛਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਨੈਨ ਹਮੈ ਇਹ ਰੇਖ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਹਮੈ ਅਬ ਹੀ ॥ ਬਿਨੁ ਰੇਖ ਭਈ ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਲਈ ਹਰਿ ਸੀਅ ਉਡਯੋ ਨਭਿ ਕਉ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥੩੫੫॥

Ravan went up to Sita as he was chanting ‘Alakh, Alakh’ just as if a thug would go to visit a wealthy person. “O doe-eyed, please come and give me some donation or food.” As Sita began to give then Ravan stopped her. “I can only accept if you cross the line.” He said. Sita crossed the line to give donation and Ravan seized her and flew into the sky.
