  ਅਥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥ Now begins the description of the Brahma Incarnation. ਚੌਪਈ ॥ Chaupai ਅਬ ਉਚਰੋ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਚਿਰਾਨੀ ॥ ਜਿਮ ਉਪਜ੍ਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਸੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਅਘ ਓਘਨ ਹਰਤਾ ॥ ਉਪਜ੍ਯੋ ਸਕਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਕਰਤਾ ॥੧॥ Now I will tell of an ancient tale of how the knowledgeable scholar Brahma took birth. The four-headed Brahma was the destroyer of all sins and creator of the universe. ਜਬ ਜਬ ਬੇਦ ਨਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਹੀ ॥ ਤਬ ਤਬ ਪੁਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਹੀ ॥ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥ ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਕਰ ਜਗਤ ਉਚਰਾ ॥੨॥ When all the Vedas slowly start disappearing then Brahma takes on his form. For this reason Vishnu himself takes on the form of Brahma and is known as “Chaturanan” (four-faced) in the world. ਜਬ ਹੀ ਬਿਸਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥ ਤਬ ਸਬ ਬੇਦ ਪ੍ਰਚੁਰ ਜਗਿ ਕਰਾ ॥ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਕਲ ਬਨਾਏ ॥ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਕੇ ਪੰਥਿ ਲਗਾਏ ॥੩॥ When Vishnu manifested himself as Brahma the knowledge of the Vedas was outspread in the world.   ਅਥ ਬੈਰਾਹ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥ Now begins the description of the Boar Incarnation. ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥ Stanza of Bhujang ਦਯੋ ਬਾਟ ਮਦਿਯੰ ਅਮਦਿਯੰ ਭਗਵਾਨੰ ॥ ਗਏ ਠਾਮ ਠਾਮੰ ਸਬੈ ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨੰ ॥ ਪੁਨਰ ਦ੍ਰੋਹ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਆਪੰ ਮਝਾਰੰ ॥ ਭਜੇ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਦਈਤ ਜਿਤੇ ਜੁਝਾਰੰ ॥੧॥ Lord Mohini distributed mead and ambrosial nectar between the demons and gods. This way all the gods and demons returned to their abodes satisfied. It wasn’t long till tension grew once again between both of them. The gods fled as the demons won over them. ਹਿਰਿਨ੍ਰਯੋ ਹਿਰਿੰਨਾਛਸੰ ਦੋਇ ਬੀਰੰ ॥ ਸਬੈ ਲੋਗ ਕੈ ਜੀਤ ਲੀਨੇ ਗਹੀਰੰ ॥ ਜਲੰ ਬਾ ਥਲੇਯੰ ਕੀਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਬੰ ॥ ਭੁਜਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਢਿਯੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੨॥ Demons, Hiranayaksha and Hiranyakashipu, were both brothers who were mighty warriors. They had conquered all the lands, enslaving everyone.   ਅਥ ਸੀਤਾ ਹਰਨ ਕਥਨੰ ॥ Now begins the description of the abduction of Sita. ਮਨੋਹਰ ਛੰਦ ॥ Stanza is Manohar. ਰਾਵਣ ਨੀਚ ਮਰੀਚ ਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬੀਚ ਗਏ ਬੱਧ ਬੀਰ ਸੁਨੈਹੈ ॥ ਬੀਸਹੂੰ ਬਾਹਿ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗਹੇ ਰਿਸ ਮਾਰ ਮਨੈ ਦਸ ਸੀਸ ਧੁਨੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਨਾਕ ਕਟਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਸੂਪਨਖਾ ਕਹਤਉ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਦੋਖ ਲਗੈ ਹੈ ॥ ਰਾਵਲ ਕੋ ਬਨੁ ਕੈ ਪਲ ਮੋ ਛਲ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਘਰਨੀ ਧਰਿ ਲਯੈ ਹੈ ॥੩੪੮॥ The foul Ravan went to the house of the demon Marich and told him about the slaughter of Khara and Dusmana. Ravan had all twenty of his hands equipped with blades. He nodded all his ten heads in fury and began to speak. “The cutting of Surapankha’s nose has caused me immense pain.   ਅਥ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਮਛ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥  Here begins the description of the first Machh Incarnation ਚੌਪਈ ॥  Chaupai ਸੰਖਾਸੁਰ ਦਾਨਵ ਪੁਨਿ ਭਯੋ ॥ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੈ ਜਗ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਦਯੋ ॥ ਮਛ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਆਪਿ ਪੁਨਿ ਧਰਾ ॥ ਆਪਨ ਜਾਪੁ ਆਪ ਮੋ ਕਰਾ ॥੩੯॥ Once there was a demon named Shankhasura, who tormented the world in many ways upon birth. To eradicate Shankhasura’s evil reign Vishnu took the form as Machh(fish) and recognized himself through meditating on it’s own name. ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੈ ਤੁਛ ਮੀਨ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥ ਪੈਠਿ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਝਕਝੋਰਨ ਕਰਾ ॥ ਪੁਨਿ ਪੁਨਿ ਕਰਤ ਭਯੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ ਸੰਖਾਸੁਰਿ ਤਬ ਕੋਪ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪੦॥ At first Machh’s form was minuscule. It became colossal overtime which shook the ocean fiercely. Shankhasur, living in the ocean with his Vedas, became infuriated.   ਅਥ ਕਛ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਨੰ ॥  Now begins the description of Kachh (Tortoise) Incarnation: ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥  Stanza of Bhujang ਕਿਤੋ ਕਾਲ ਬੀਤਯੋ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਦੇਵ ਰਾਜੰ ॥ ਭਰੇ ਰਾਜ ਧਾਮੰ ਸੁਭੰ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜੰ ॥ ਗਜੰ ਬਾਜ ਬੀਣੰ ਬਿਨਾ ਰਤਨ ਭੂਪੰ ॥ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਸਨ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥੧॥ A long time had passed as Indra, the king of gods, ruled. All of the palaces were filled with immense treasures and comforts. The King’s armoury was lacking elephants, steeds, and jewels. Such was in the thoughts of Vishnu as he explored his mind one day. “Something should be done on this matter…” he contemplated. ਸਬੈ ਦੇਵ ਏਕਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਨੇ ਪੁਰਿੰਦ੍ਰੰ ॥ ਸਸੰ ਸੂਰਜੰ ਆਦਿ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਉਪਿੰਦ੍ਰੰ ॥ ਹੁਤੇ ਦਈਤ ਜੇ ਲੋਕ ਮਧ੍ਰਯੰ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ ਭਏ ਏਕਠੇ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਭਾਵੰ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥ Vishnu gathered all the gods in his court. From Chandra, Surya, to Upendra all were present at this calling.   ਅਥ ਖਰਦੂਖਨ ਦਈਤ ਜੁੱਧ ਕਥਨੰ ॥  Now begins the description of the battle with demons Khar and Dusman. ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ਛੰਦ ॥  Stanza of Sundari ਰਾਵਨ ਤੀਰ ਰੁਰੋਤ ਭਈ ਜਬ ॥ ਰੋਸ ਭਰੇ ਦਨੁ ਬੰਸ ਬਲੀ ਸਭ ॥ ਲੰਕਸ ਧੀਰ ਬਜੀਰ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥ ਦੂਖਨ ਔ ਖਰ ਦਈਤ ਪਠਾਏ ॥੩੩੭॥  When Surapanakha weeped to Ravana, the entire demon-clan was enraged. Ravana summoned his court ministers. With their guidance he sent two demons named Khar and Dusmana to kill Ram and avenge Surapanakha. ਸਾਜ ਸਨਾਹ ਸੁਬਾਹ ਦੁਰੰ ਗਤ ॥ ਬਾਜਤ ਬਾਜ ਚਲੇ ਗਜ ਗੱਜਤ ॥ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਸੋ ਦਿਸ ਕੂਕੇ ॥ ਸਾਵਨ ਕੀ ਘਟ ਜਯੋਂ ਘੁਰ ਢੂਕੇ ॥੩੩੮॥  The long-armed demons, Khar and Dusman, adorned themselves with armour and left on their steeds with the noise of many elephants following.   In Satyug, when Vishnu’s first avatar, known as Machh, came, that's when Brahma’s one kalp day had come to an end and his night had begun. Brahma’s kalp night is just as big as his kalp day. Brahma fell asleep. As he was asleep. Shankhasur took form within the ocean. One day a Rajarishi (Royal-Saint) was on the banks of Karmanasa performing Jalanjhali. Within Sanatan Dharam, Jalanjhali was a term given when a saint stood in the river and took a scoop of water with his both hands and poured it towards the direction of the sun to commemorate the Gods. When Rajarishi was doing Jalanjhali then in one of the scoops a fish made its way into his hand. He threw the fish back into the river. “Don’t leave me here” The fish begged Rajarishi not to be left in the river. “The other creatures torment me to an unbearable extent...” the fish continued. The Rajarishi took pity and put the fish in his water pouch. He observed the pouch over time and saw that the fish appears to be growing in size....
